Siempre queremos lo que no tenemos. Si estás en una orilla, siempre piensas que en la orilla de enfrente habrá muchos más peces. Si normalmente pescamos unas especies, queremos pescar las que no hay en nuestra zona. Así somos los pescadores… Yo vivo en España, en la costa este, así que me he criado pescando en el mar, y en aguas continentales pescando al bass. Especies como la lucioperca, la perca o el sirulo son grandes desconocidos para todos los pescadores de la zona, entre los que me incluyo. Así como la mayoría de aficionados al bass repudian el resto de especies (por lo menos en mi país), yo siempre me he visto atraído por ellas.

We always want what we don’t have. If you’re fishing in one shore, you always think that the opposite shore is better. If we normally spend our time fishing certain species, we will prefer to catch other different species. I live in the East coast of Spain, so I grew up fishing in the Mediterranean sea, specially for bluefish, leerfish, tuna and seabass. I also spent a lot of hours fishing for pike and bass, in damns, lakes and channels. Therefore species such as zander, catfish or perch are not well know for me, and contrary to the bast majority of bass anglers fo my región, I always have beenin love with those fish.  

Bajo esta premisa, quedé con mi buen amigo Freddy Harbort, uno de los mejores pescadores de agua dulce que he conocido en mi vida. Tenía 2 días por delante, para ponerme un poco al día en la pesca de estas especies tan desconocidas para mí, y Freddy la misión de hacerme comprender sus técnicas. Las 2 jornadas fueron muy similares y difíciles de olvidar, por lo que sólo relataré una de ellas. El escenario, Caspe, uno de los lagos más presionados de Europa, pero con una buena población de estas especies. Por lo que me habían comentado, no iba a ser difícil localizar los peces, pero sí hacerlos picar.

In this context, I met with my buddy Freddy Harbort, one of the best freshwater anglers I ever met in my life. I had 2 days to learn, and he had 2 days to teach me his way to go. Both days were very similar, and difficult to forget. Caspe was the lake selected, oneof the most pressed lakes in Europe, but with a big population of good size fish. What I Heard is that, it was going to be easy to find fish, but not getting the bite.

6:30 AM Arriba!! No sabes ni cómo te llamas a esa hora, pero a pesar de eso, desayuno rápido, 1 minuto conduciendo y ya estábamos subidos en la barca, aun quitándonos las legañas pero con unas ganas locas de destruir. Empezamos pescando grandes cambios de profundidad, cerca de la orilla, buscando percas y luciopercas activas, que se estuviesen alimentando en zonas someras. Podíamos encontrar peces tanto en el fondo como a media agua, así que empecé dándole caña al Vibrator, un jig metálico que produce grandes vibraciones y puedes usarlo de mil maneras: a saltitos por el fondo, recogida lineal, pesca vertical… Los primeros peces se hicieron esperar, tres percas de un tamaño muy similar, entre 1,5 y 2 kilos, que atacaron el señuelo en el fondo. 2 Más pequeñas, y una lucioperca de un par de quilos, redondearon un buen comienzo de la jornada.

6:30AM Wake Up! At this time, you don’t even know what is your name, but despite this, we had a fast breakfast, 1 minute drive and we were in the boat! We run about 20 minutes, and we start fishing an area with an enormous drop off. We firstly thought that small zanders and perchs could be hunting on this drop, very close to the shore, settle in the bottom or in middle water, so I rigged my Vibrator, a 28grs metal jig that makes a lot of vibrations and can be used in very different ways: steady retrieve, bottom bouncing,  falling action… The first fish of the day came swiftly, 3 big perch that weighted 1,5kg and 2Kg, both  swallowed the lure in the bottom. 2 Smaller perch  and a 2kg zander were the rest of the fish that we pulled out of the water in the first spot, not a bad begining.

Después de probar 3 zonas de similares características, y puesto que el sol ya estaba alto, decidimos cambiar el chip, y navegamos a otra zona del embalse en busca de luciopercas de buen tamaño. Cambiamos los jigs y demás señuelos metálicos por grandes jerks y lombrices de vinilo, montados en jigheads de 20 a 40 gramos, dependiendo la profundidad. Las nuevas zonas eran muy similares a las que habíamos pescado a primera hora, pero por razones que escapan a mi entender, estaban llenas de bolas de alburnos. Respecto al movimiento de los señuelos, excesivamente lento, pensando en todo momento que el pez está siguiendo el vinilo, y a sabiendas de que al primer movimiento brusco, el pez se dará la vuelta y dejará de seguir nuestro cebo. Así que rápidamente monté una AT worm negra, del tamaño más grande, sobre una jighead de 40 gramos y le añadí  un triple en la cola, para clavar todo lo que se acercase.

We decided to look for big zanders, after hitting 3 similar zones, due the sun was high. We changed jigs and lipless by big soft plastics, rigged in a 20 to 40grs jighead, depending on the depth. The new áreas were very similar tan the ones we fished in the morning, but they were full of schools of baitfish, I don’t know why. About the movement of the lures, you had to do it as slow as you can, imagining that the fish is following the lure every time, and knowing that if you make any Sharp jerk, the fish will come back to the bottom, laughting of your lure. So I fastly rigged an AT Worm, adding a treble hook in the tail, to hook every thing that be close to the lure.

En los primeros lances Freddy consiguió subir al barco una preciosa lucioperca de más de 78cm, dándome toda una clase práctica de cómo se pesca esta especie. A los pocos minutos, noté una fuerte picada, a la que respondí con una enérgica clavada, y tras un combate bastante intenso, subió a flote otra preciosa lucioperca de 77cm, mi record de esta especie!!! Después de hacerle las fotos pertinentes, seguimos pescando, y entonces sucedió algo que no creía posible, y es que Freddy, haciendo alarde nuevamente de su avanzado conocimiento de esta pesca, sacó 2 luciopercas de 76 y 79 cm de 2 lances seguidos. Ni en mis mejores sueños hubiese imaginado algo así… Y cuando ya parecía que la situación no podía mejorar, peleo un pez que identifico como un sirulo de unos 7-8 kilos, y de repente sale a la superficie otra monstruosa lucioperca de 82cm. No daba crédito… Habían salido 6 luciopercas de más de 76cm, un par más pequeñas y 2 sirulos pequeños, ¡y en menos de 3 horas!

Freddy managed to land a beautifull zander during the first cast, a 78cm specimen; he gave me a practical lesson about zander fishing! A few minutes after, I felt a heavy bite, which I responsed with a hard set up, and after a pretty intense fight, I caught a 77cm zander, my new record of this specie! After shooting a few pictures, I happened something that I will never expected, and is that Freddy caught 2 huge zanders (76 and 79cm in 2 consecutive casts. I would have never thought that it was posible… WHen I was sure that nothing could be better, I started fighting a fish that I identified as a small catfish, because it was very powerful, but weighting not too much, and then, it came to the Surface a huge zander, an 82cm monster. I was not believing what was happening… We have caught 6 huge zanders, 2 small catfish and a few perchs, in less tan 3 hours!

Sin duda, Caspe se trata de uno de los embalses más divertidos de nuestro país, en el que puedes encontrar una buena población de sirulo, perca y lucioperca, además de algún bass. La presión de pesca es bastante elevada, pero si afinas y das con la tecla, hay gran cantidad de peces trofeo listos para morder tus señuelos, como has podido comprobar con esta crónica.

I have no doubt when I argue that Caspe is one of the most funny lakes of our country, where you find a huge population of catfish, perch, zander, carp, blend, and also some bass. Fishing pressure is so high, but if you know what to do, there’re a lot of trophy fish just waiting for you, ready to bite your lures, as you could verify on this chronicle.

Antes de despedirme, me gustaría hacer una pequeña reseña al alojamiento y alquiler de embarcaciones, ya que ha sido de los mejores servicios que he tenido en mi vida. Se trata de una pequeña empresa llamada urlaub-nach-mass y gestionada por Oliver Schier, que ofrecen desde alojamiento, alquiler de barcos, servicio de guía, tienen hasta tienda de pesca… Los chalets son una pasada, y están situados a tan sólo 2 minutos en coche de Fayon o Caspe, por lo que puedes elegir que pantano prefieres pescar. Nosotros no contratamos servicio de guía, pero estuve conversando durante la cena con 2 de ellos y me parecieron gente muy profesional. Las barcas son una pasada, barcas enormes de fibra, totalmente diáfanas, equipadas con motores 4T nuevos; sin duda superó con creces mis expectativas. Podéis encontrar toda la información en su web.

Before saying bye, I would like to talk a few about the housing and boat rental services, becausse is one of the best I ever had in my life. We were in hands of a small German company called urlaub-nach-mass, that is managed by Olivier Schier. They offer housing, boat rental, fishing guides, and eany kind of things you want to do in the lake… They have even a small fishing shop in their office! The houses are amazing, and they are located just 2 minutes from Caspe and Fayon, so you can decide what lake you want to fish each day. We didn’t contracted the guiding service, but I have been talking with 2 of the guides during the dinner, and they are true experts, having a lot of knowledge and experience of both damns. About the boats, they’re fantastic, enormous and diaphanous boats, all of them equiped with new engines four strokes. You can find all the information of their website.
