1st of Juny, 3:40 AM. I finished my job, and I’m very tired. After serving cockails throughout more than 8 hours at frantic rhythm, I’m done. In fact, I was thinking the estrategy: a short visit to the pool and straightforwardly to the bed. But, a small thing changed all. When I was comming out to the cocktail bar, I looked up, looking for stars. And, do you know what I found? A wonderful full moon, completely round and enlightened, that allow you to see like if we were at 1 PM. A lot of anglers think that full moon means succesful fishing, and I’m one of them. So I got motivation from the moon, plus I have been 2 weeks out of the water… I need to go fishing!

So I went home, I made a look to the weather forecast (0 knots, perfect!), and I put in my car 2 rods, a few lures and my float tube. The day before, I heard a story of  local guy, that lost a huge fish in a rocky area located north side of the island, so here I go! It sounds like a movie, but I had no choice, as I knew nothing here, so I had no idea of were can I go.

5:00AM

Therefore I turn on Google Maps, I wrote the adress, and the result was very extrange, something like… 15 miles, 57 minutes ¿?¿? How can be possible? The road was very cramped, and it was in very bad condition. After passing deserts, snow covered mountains, and one volcano (maybe I’m exaggerating) I head the expected phrase…  You reached your destination. 5:00AM.

It was a cliff in a rocky area. The moon was fully depicted in the water, because there were no waves. On this moment, I felt lucky just to be there, looking this awesome landscape. I finished to set up all the fishing stuff at 5:30, I took  seat on my float tube, and I started paddling toward deep water.

The water was as clear that you can see the bottom in more than 30 feet depth, so I rigged long thin leaders in both rods, to deceive every single fish I cross. My goal was to catch some  medium size bottom fish, so I sellected 2 spinning rods, with a very similar action, up to 1 oz. Plus spinfisher 3500 and 4500 with Spiderwire 0,14, and a 20lbs Trilene Fluoro. About the lures, At Minnow, AT Worm, sinking stickbaits like the Stick Shad, and a lot of different bottom toys.

Finally, I began fishing. I wanted to find a rocky bottom, with a lot of depth variations. That is the common area where you can find snappers, dentex, amberjacks, groupers and the bast majority of bottom predators. But all I found was sand and poseidonea (kind of plant) so I continued casting and moving, searching rocks. Then, I found a huge gap, from 105 to 135 feet, that was the limit between sand and rocks. I had no doubt, it was the place. I wasted one hour on this gap, without results. Changing the lure, size, color, different retrieves… At the end, I decided to rig a 10cm White AT Minnow, with a 30grs Berkley Ripple jighead, the smallest lure I had with me, in order to get al least one bite of a small fish. I had to wait a lot to reach the bottom on each cast, but it was so natural and realistic.

6:50 AM.

Suddenly, after a lot of casts over the gap, meanwhile the softbait was dropping, I felt a hit on the line. I closed the pick up, and I set the hook. The rod was totally bend, and I keept the tension a few seconds. But nothing happened, and I thought that my lure was snagged in the bottom, and I confounded the bite with a hit to the line with the palm, due I didn’t sleept even a minute in a lot of hours. Therefore, I pull hard 2 or 3 times, trying to get back the lure. Then, a violent force put my rod straight, and the fish run more tan 250 meters nonstop. Then, he did the same bu on my direction, so the line was slack close to 30 seconds, because the retrieval ratio of a small spinning reel, that is close to be run out of line, is incredibly low. Thanks to God, I newly got the tension, and the fish stayed there. The continued the fight, and the fish was pulling me to deep water. On this moment, I made self-reflection: to be honest, I don’t think I’m gonna see the fish I hooked, and I’m being pull too far from the coast (too far to be in a float tube), and my tackle is too short to catch a monster, so for a single moment, I thought I should cut the line. But I was not willing to give up, so I decided to keep putting all my effort to land this fish, with my 7’ Medium Heavy bass rod, and the Spinfisher 3500 filled of 0,14mm Spiderwire braid + 0,40mm Trilene fluorocarbon leader.

After the first hour of fight, I relized that  the runs were being shorter and less powerful. Then, the play changed, the fish was not getting more line of my reel, he was just pulling me, obviously to Deep water! After 90 minutes, I had the fish 60-70 feet under the float tube, so I began to reduce the distance between me and the monster. Suddenly, I saw an enormous black spot, comming to me. The leadercame out of the water, and I realized that the braid was significantly damaged, so I caught the leader with my hand. On this moment, a 90 pound Bluefin tuna rose to the Surface, among my legs. The lure was hooked in the mouth, but not inside, that’s the reason the line was not cut. The hook of the jighead (Berkley Ripple head 30grs) was perfect, not bend.

No way to pull the head out of the water, even to shoot a picture. The weight was massive!

On this moment, I began to shout, as if I won the lottery, because I have caught a huge tuna with a bass tackle! I would never dream it, as is close to be imposible… throughout the 3 hours I spent to come back to the shore, I was talking myself… None is going to trust it, because, if someone tells me this story, I will never believe it. Firstly, because there’s no way to pull a 90 pound bluefin tuna with a MH bass rod. Secondly, 0,14mm of braid in simply ridiculous to land a fish of that size. Thirdly, I was using a Spinfisher 3500, that seems to be not enought to be success on that fight. At last, the AT Minnow was rigged with a pike jighead, with a very thin hook, last thing I would use for tunas.

About the weight, I'm 100% sure it weighted more thn 90lbs, don't ask me why...

I can state that it’s the heaviest fishing experience I lived. Because I was alone, sailing in open water with the float tube and I was fishing light tackle. Throughout the fight, I never thought I was going to land the fish, I was fighting just to say: I did as much as I could.
After that day, I learnt a few important things: never going alone to the sea with the foat tube, light tackleis not made to catch 90 pounds tunas, and, the most important, never give up!! If you give all of you, putting 100% of your effort, you will have a high success rate. And, if you don’t reach your goal, you can be also satisfied, because you did your best. That way to go works as well in life generally, not just in fishing.

Thank you so much for your time, and see you soon.

90lbs Bluefin Tuna Float Tube

I have been sick in the last 2 years about pike fishing.

I have to say it was not a fish that particularly caught my attention, in fact it was problematic to manipulate and I never came expressly for them, they were accidentally catches, fishing for LMB.

Everything changed in August 2013 when we went out for a few days to Cijara, a spanish reservoir located in Extremadura, with the aim of catching a good pike. We were accompanied by Roberto Murillo and Francisco Javier, from the guiding Company Guadiana Boats, 2 of the most experinced guides of the area.

Let’s get to the point, 14 pike over a meter in just days, between 2 anglers. Numbers that are more associated with a Canadian lake than a Spanish damn ...

Y muchas lecciones aprendidas.
We were lucky to be shooting during the two days we spent in the water, and the result is awesome! Live viles,  flying rods through the air, monstrous fish, great food, excellent company ... and many lessons learned.

Lucios en Vertical - The Trailer.

Pescar!!! :-D
After 1 month of hard work it's my first free day so I go Fishing!!! :-D

I know the island well, due I've seen it sailing with the boat, but I have no idea what spots are good and which are not. We do not usually fish the island, because the people here steals the spots and then mutilated it by spearfishing, so we always go fishing uninhabited islands, far away from prying eyes.

Looking for deep rocky points with current, I turn to the south of the island. I park the car at the end of the road, and after walking from the longest beach of the area, about 500 meters, the rock festival begins. Slippery as a skating rink, and cutting like a knife. They are not at all porous, so my Merrel specials ravines, here are useless, I slide as if it were barefoot.

After 100 meters scavenger hunt through the rocks, dodging fallen trees and climbing, I reached the point in question. I think it cost me more than 5 minutes to make these 100 meters, but it is better ensure every step than break a leg, right?
Penn Torque 7000 full of Spyderwire 40lbs & Sebile Splasher Salt&Sun

I rig the Salt & Sun Splasher, ultra reinforced by what might happen ... I look a stone near the water and I assure the feet in 2 holes to not leave the water casting or when I get a bite and I start fishing. First cast l hook a shitty needlefish; I take out the hook and I release it. Second cast, I get a bige of another needle, which thankfully does not hook, and then I saw a dark shadow and hits me really hard
Pargo Roquero. Sebile Splasher S&S + Penn Torque

I did not go to water the bite of miracle, because my brake was close to be bloked. The fish won me like 10 meters, I was hanging back of the rod, and he stuck in the rocks! I unstrung 2 seconds and then I put maximum pressure, and It came out. Then it starts to go sideways, so I have to jump from rock to rock as having a chilli in the ass, playing with the dead, to not get a cut line with the stones. I even opened the pick up once when I felt the line was touching a rock. It all came out perfect, and within seconds I had this gorgeous Rocker Snapper on my feet.
I made some fast auto pictures and I release it in perfect conditions this awesome fish.

I've realized that I need a flotation medium to fish here, because one day I’m going to open the head with a rock, besides it's natural when you hook a big fish in these spots is that you bust all. So I'm going to give rest to the big fish until I find something to float.
Greetings to all you and see you soon

From the city to the Archipelago
De la ciudad al archipiélago

Finally we headed to Las Perlas, after 4 days buying tons of supplies,  leaving Panama City, the city that never sleeps.

What I see from the apartment... not too bad!

Before leaving the city, I think not for a long time, because you have to go back to buy luxurious things as water or gasoline, I would like to make a short description of this. Imagine 24 hours of light, traffic, shops that never close, and hard core jams up in the queue of the super market.

It is a city of huge contrasts, growing  day by day, without order or some planning. 30-storey skyscraper between shanty towns. Super rich and super poor people, not too much middle class.Despotism still working here, it’s  better to have good contacts than anything else. Well, contacts and money, because without money you can do just por things: walking, complimenting women,  buy beers in the supermarket and dancing salsa, vallenato, Merenguito ...

Simple & happy life, what more can I need?

Although it seems that not much is needed to be happy here, and this is reflected in the faces of the people. Panamanians are a different kettle fish, no doubt. Poor and happy. They  have a chance to win more money, but they just work to live, they don’t live to work to buy an ipod, a spensive car... They aspire to anything, they  just live, and they are happy.

Well, I stop now with my socio-economic considerations, so we loaded everything into the boat and we go to Las Perlas!
                                                         Welcome to isla Contadora!

After running  the 35 miles between the mainland and the archipelago, we finally arrived! I have no words to describe the beauty of the place. Islands and more islands, upholstered jungle with  thousands of birds of all kinds. It remind me to Jurassic Park, really. We docked the boat at the only dock on the island and we started to download all the food, between thousands of fish of all sizes and colors that you can see from the dock, as if it was a tank.

The anxiety starts to come inside me,  I need to catch some fish now!!!After leaving everything at home, Charles told me something I will never forget ... Now let's go to catch your first Rooster! O_o Ehhh, sorry?
O_o  Ehhh, perdona?

Now I start to understand why people is crossing the planet to go fishing for a week with this guy. I caught a 50lbs up Roosterfish in the second cast of my life in the Pacific Ocean, with a popper, obviously. It’s the most electric fish I've ever felt. Indescribable sensations.

Fishing only just started and has left me stunned. I really want to discover all the possibilities of the island, and start exploring shore spots.

Arriving to Panama city this morning

Next week I will tell you more stories. Let’s see if we can buy a new router tomorrow, because a lightning burned it last night (I'm in Panama city today), if you hear no news from me in a few days, is because another lightning have busted the new one XD

Until then, tight lines for everyone !!
